Do I need a Passport to have surgery in Tijuana?:
If you're a US citizens you only require a State Issued Picture ID like a driver's licence to be able to cross the International border. For non US citizens a valid passport is mandatory entering the country.
Is Tijuana Safe?:
Tijuana is very safe city especially for the tourist. Tijuana being a the hub for medical tourism internationally, its main priority has been tourist safety. You may have heard of TIjuana being dangerous. That has become history. Tijuana did go through a bad couple of years back in 2008 but the city has made a turnaround and completely recovered now thriving in tourism and specialty medical.
What Hotel do I stay in Tijuana?: We set all our patients at The Grand Hotel Tijuana the night before the surgery date.
To have surgery in Tijuana, where do I have to fly to?:
You need to purchase from your location to San Diego, California and back.
Will someone pick me up at the San Diego International Airport?:
Yes, we have a dedicated transportation team that will pick you up at the airport and take you into Tijuana. Once you are discharged, we will take you back to the airport. Transportation is included in your surgery package.
Will I need to bring money for take home meds?:
Yes, you will need to bring $85 dollars cash (No Credit) to purchase the meds before discharge. Our patient runner will go and get those for you so you don't have to leave the facility.
Where can my companion(s) eat in Tijuana?:
Our patient runner will get them any type of food they desire. There is an array of different types of food in Tijuana. Food for companions is at their own expense.
What Hotel do I stay in Tijuana?: We set all our patients at The Grand Hotel Tijuana.
Who is the Patient Coordinator for Both Dr. Sergio Verboonen & Dr. Jaime Ponce de Leon in Tijuana: JC Urrea is the Lead Patient coordinator for both surgeons.
Day
Arrival Day
Once you arrive at the San Diego California International Airport expect the following;

Transportation to Hotel or Hospital
- A private driver will meet you at the San Diego International Airport and transport you to the Grand Hotel Tijuana. If you arrive the same day of surgery, the driver will transport you straight to Obesity Good Bye or INT Hospital and (START FROM DAY TWO)
(IMPORTANT: Make sure to fast after 10pm that night to be ready for all lab work the next morning.
- A private driver will meet you at the San Diego International Airport and transport you to the Grand Hotel Tijuana. If you arrive the same day of surgery, the driver will transport you straight to Obesity Good Bye or INT Hospital and (START FROM DAY TWO)
Day
Surgery Day
Morning of surgery expect the following;

Hotel and Hospital
- Our patient coordinator assistant Carlos will meet you in the lobby of the Grand Hotel at 8:30am and transport you straight to Obesity Good Bye to get prepaired for surgery. NOTE: For those patients that reserved INT Hospital, you'll first complete the pre operatives at Obesity Good Bye and be transported to INT after they are completed. You'll be assigned your recovery suite.

Once at Obesity Good Bye
- You will be admitted and start to fill out all your consent forms, make final balace payment, pay the $85 for take home medications, and get prepped for surgery.
- You will have your labwork, EKG and chest x. ray performed.
- You will have a full consultation with your surgical team and all last minute questions will be answered.
- NOTE: For those patients that reserved INT Hospital, you will be taken after these above steps are completed and assigned your recovery suite.
Surgery
- Your procedure is performed using a laparoscopic approach and surgery time will vary for each individual patient.
- Patients will spend one to two nights at Obesity Good Bye or INT Hospital after their surgery is performed.
- After the surgery, patients will be up and walking only a few hours from waking up.
- The recovery rooms at INT hospital are private and a family member or companion is welcome to spend the night during patient stay.
- Patient have access to the hospitals and Hotel WIFI to be able to call and email family members back home.
- The recovery rooms at Obesity Good Bye are both private and shared. A family member or companion is welcome to spend the night during patient stay but on a chair. If a bed comes up available, companions are more then welcome to have it but there is no guarantee.
Day
Rest & Recovery
Once you enter the next day after the surgery, you could expect the following;

Relaxation & Recovery
- In the next day, patient dedicate it for rest, relaxation, and recovery. Patients are showered and are expected to get up and walk every hour or two for 15 minutes.
- Patients that had the Lap Band and Gastric Plication are discharged this day after spending 24 hours with us. They will meet with the surgery team; have a discussion about nutrition, and how to best achieve the desired results with their new Weight Loss Surgery. These patients are driven back to the Hotel where they will spend an additional night before being driven back to the airport for the journey back home.

Recovery & Return to Home / Other Patients

Discharge
- This day Lap Band and Gastric Plication patients will be chauffeured to the airport to return home.
- This day Gastric Sleeve, Mini Gastric Bypass and Full Gastric Bypass patients are discharged after having their post-operative testing (fluoroscopy exam) performed and after meeting with the surgery team once again to discuss their weight loss goals. Patients will be chauffeured back to the San Diego International Airport to return home.
- We require that all patients commit to a follow up with their general practitioner back home six to eight weeks post procedure.
